Tech Tip #239: IBF314 Pilot Bearing Installation Made Easy

Share

Replacing an IBF314 PTO? Caution! This clutch can be different!

Mechanical power takeoff clutches usually have a one piece sealed pilot bearing that is pressed into the flywheel. In an earlier Foley Engines Tech Tip (Tech Tip #67: How to Remove a Troublesome Pilot Bearing) , we wrote about pilot bearing installation and removal techniques.  Some earlier IBF pilot bearings were a two piece bearing with a roller bearing and a removable inner race. To install them properly required a different technique than the standard one piece pilot bearing used in other PTO models and used on the more current IBF314 model PTOs.

This Foley Engines Tech Tip focuses on how to install a two piece bearing on an older Twin Disc® IBF314 PTO or some of the equivalent earlier WPT Power® PTOs (i.e WTD-14-314, P14-31AC-006 or P14-31AC-007).

If your PTO came with a split-type roller pilot bearing, please follow the steps below, while referring to the diagram.

  • Press the pilot bearing inner race on the end of the shaft, stopping when the bearing is flush with the shaft.
  • Measure the distance from the PTO bell housing face to the end of the bearing inner race.

Record this value, A: __________

  • Measure the width of the bearing outer race.

Record this value, B: __________

  • Subtract the value of step 3 from the value of step 2 (A-B=C). This is the distance the outer race needs to be installed from the engine bell housing face for proper alignment.

Record this value, C: __________

  • Install the outer pilot bearing race into the flywheel to the depth calculated in step 4. It is recommended to sign, date, and keep a copy of this for your records.
