Foley Engines in addition to WPT, Twin Disc, Rockford, and Autoclutch, now represents Stein Manufacturing, the manufacturer of Stein PTO Clutches. A Stein Clutch is an automotive-style PTO assembly found commonly on wood chippers and other industrial applications. Unlike a WPT or Twin Disc over-center clutch, which have a ‘clutch pack’ with usually a single or double row of ‘teeth’ captured by cast iron backing plates with a bronze collar ‘release bearing’. A Stein Clutch as, an automotive clutch, has a disc and pressure plate. As an automotive style industrial clutch the Stein clutch is similar to the AutoClutch HD1300D clutch.
We stock kits for Stein clutches. These kits include a pilot bearing, clutch disc, pressure plate, throw out bearing, an installation tool, and a Foley booklet on PTO maintenance. For severe duty applications such as a wood chipper, we offer an optional disc. This heavy duty disc features a carbon ceramic disc which will engage more smoothly and last significantly longer. Some automotive style PTO users such as a Stein Clutch owner prefer a rigid disc vs. a disc with springs. For those on the fence as to which disc to use, please review our Dr Diesel Tech Tip #231, AutoClutch and Stein PTO Discs: Rigid vs. Springs. Time to Reconsider?
Some of our Stein clutch and AutoClutch customers report difficulty in installing or removing their pilot bearing when they change discs. We recommend that that they check out our Tech Tip#239, Twin Disc, Stein Clutch, and Twin Disc IBF Pilot Bearing Installation Made Easy for info on how to remove troublesome pilot bearings.
