The Evolution And Solution To Continental TM27 and TMD27 Series Engine Oil Consumption
For several decades, one of Foley Engines’ specialties was Continental engines and particularly the models used in forklifts and other industrial applications.
The TM27 and TMD27 Series Continental Engines have proved themselves to be workhorses in many industrial applications. This engine’s overhead valve design was a first for Teledyne Continental; introduced in 1980 to replace the familiar flathead F Series Continental. This TM series industrial engines featured an engine cylinder head designed by the then world famous British consulting firm, Ricardo Engineering.
Despite the international expertise brought to bear on this new design, one problem quickly surfaced: excessive oil consumption. This may have been a machining problem at their new plant in Tennessee as Continental quickly released an oversize valve guide, part number TM27I0315. However, the problem persisted and attention was focused on the original umbrella seal, PN TM27I0211. Later, Continental released a newer valve stem seal, PN TM27I00319 along with newer valve guides, PN TM27I316 which was thought to cure this problem.
Today, Foley Engines only stocks a few popular replacement components for Continental engines here on our website. We take our commitment to tech support seriously so if you have more questions you can e-mail us at info@foleyengines.com or call us at 866-821-2454.
