Hurth Gear Shift Position: A Warning
In previous Tech Tips and Shop Kinks, we have written about the care and maintenance of ZF/Hurth transmissions. These Dr Diesel Tips and Shop Kinks have focused on the correct lube oil to use, our innovative stainless steel oil coolers, damper plates etc. See, for example, Tech Tip #11, Hurth Gears: Their Care and Maintenance, Tech Tip #27, Marine Coolers and Couplers, Tech Tip #39, Hurth Marine Transmissions: The Ins and Outs of Basic Maintenance, and Tech Tip #48, ZF/Hurth Transmissions: A Six Step Program. We have also written about ZF marine gears in our more informal Shop Kink Series. See, for example, Shop Kink #1, Marine Transmission Fluid, Shop Kink #24, Avoiding Idle Gears, which originally appeared in National Fisherman, and Shop Kink #30, ZF/Hurth Marine Gears: Coupler or Damper Plate 101. But this Shop Kink is different. It offers a note of caution.
CAUTION
When sailing or when being towed never leave your Hurth mechanical transmission in the "Forward" positon. This puts an unacceptable strain on your Hurth marine transmisson. Transmission damage will result. To avoid this you can lock the propeller by putting the gear shift lever in the "Reverse" position or leave it in the "Neutral" postion and it will free wheel.
